North City Islamic Youth Centre (NCIYC) is a growing mosque and community hub located in the heart of Porirua, serving Muslims and the wider community throughout the Wellington region.
Established to meet the spiritual, educational and social needs of a growing Muslim population, NCIYC provides a welcoming environment where individuals and families can worship, learn, connect and contribute positively to society.
NCIYC is driven by a dedicated team of volunteers, community members, professionals, and supporters who share a common goal: to serve Allah ﷻ by serving His creation.
Our team consists of brothers and sisters from diverse backgrounds who generously contribute their time, expertise, and resources to help establish and maintain a thriving Islamic centre for current and future generations.
Our vision extends beyond providing a place of prayer. We aspire to create a thriving Islamic Centre that nurtures faith, promotes knowledge, strengthens families, empowers youth, supports reverts, advances Da'wah and serves as a positive contributor to New Zealand society.
Guided by the teachings of Islam, we are committed to building a vibrant and inclusive community where people of all ages and backgrounds can strengthen their relationship with Allah, develop a strong Islamic identity and make meaningful contributions to the wider community.
The journey of North City Islamic Youth Centre began in 2023 in response to the growing needs of the Muslim community in Porirua and the wider northern Wellington region.
What started as a small community initiative operating from rented premises at 7 Serlby Place, Porirua, was driven by a vision to establish a permanent home for worship, education, youth development, revert support and community engagement.
Through the dedication of volunteers, community leaders and generous donors, the Centre has continued to grow and evolve, laying the foundations for a lasting Islamic institution that will serve future generations.
North City Islamic Youth Centre was established to provide a welcoming environment for worship, learning and community engagement, with a particular focus on supporting youth and reverts.
A major milestone was achieved when the Centre entered into a contract to acquire 2 Cobham Court, Porirua for $850,000. Formerly occupied by Westpac Bank, the building comprises approximately 840 square metres over two levels in the heart of Porirua City Centre. The acquisition marks a significant step towards establishing a permanent Islamic Centre.
Renovation and improvement works commenced to transform the premises. The initial budget was ~$100,000. Alhamdulillah, only ~$10,000 was spent directly by the Centre, with the balance generously contributed through donated labour, materials and services from our supportive community.
The premises are expected to become operational and ready for community use, enabling the Centre to commence services and programmes from its new home.
Settlement of the property purchase is scheduled for January 2027, marking the completion of a significant chapter in the Centre's development and paving the way for future expansion.
